Since 1995, the Sisterhood has been an important part of the Nevada County Jewish Community Center. The mission of the Sisterhood is to provide service to the NCJCC by fostering a caring community of women willing to serve and to participate in a wide range of activities. We meet the first Thursday of the month at 12:30 p.m. at the Center. We provide ample time for socializing before our general business meeting. Each month, we host a guest speaker who is informative or inspiring.
In addition, we have a Book Club that meets the second Monday of the month. Sisterhood book discussions are stimulating and result in a lively few hours. The books, while usually incorporating a Jewish theme, cover a range of authors and topics, including fiction and non-fiction. Several non-Jewish women have joined the Sisterhood, specifically because of the outstanding conversation generated at our discussions.
The Sisterhood helps to financially support the Center through our Judaica Shop and various fundraisers, which have in the past included game days, fashion shows, dances, cooking classes and theatrical presentations. In addition, we provide catering services for special family occasions at the Center. With these funds, we have helped to replace the windows and window coverings in the Sanctuary and the Social hall, purchased the stove and refrigerator and many of the items in the kitchen, and the chairs in the Social Hall. Currently, we provide nutritious snacks for the Sunday School, pay the water bill for the Center, and give a gift to a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebrant. We also organize the Friday night Onegs. Through our fund-raising efforts we have also supported local community organizations-in-need that focus on women and children.
We welcome all women of the Center, as well as women who are not affiliated with the Center, to join the Sisterhood. Contact Anita DuPratt via email at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Sisterhood Book Club meets the 2nd Monday of the month @ 1:30pm. The only requirement is a love of reading and interest in discussing what we have read.
