Sisterhood

Striving to make a difference

The Congregation B’nai Harim Sisterhood of the NCJCC is a community of diverse women that offers opportunities for friendship, learning and contributing to the vitality of the NCJCC community as well as to the community-at-large. Our group includes both Jewish and non-Jewish women who share similar ideals regarding community and service. We value the energy, ideas, and participation of our members.

Our meetings and gatherings are filled with laughter, storytelling, and sharing our gift of time – as we support each other and strive to make a difference in our own lives and in the lives of those within the greater community.

Sisterhood has been affiliated with the NCJCC for over 27 years. From its beginnings in 1995, the Sisterhood’s goal has been to bring together Jewish women of Grass Valley, Nevada City and the surrounding area.

Monthly meetings are generally held the first Thursday of each month (September–June) at the NCJCC at 12:30 p.m. – allowing ample time for socializing before our general
meeting at 1:00 p.m., followed by a program which begins at 2:00 p.m. Program topics are interesting, diverse, and cover topics such as local interest, women’s issues, health and well- being, community building, Judaism and more. We sponsor special events, fundraisers and programs throughout the year, allowing those who are unable to attend our regular meetings to participate in Sisterhood activities.

Charitable Giving and Additional Supports

Sisterhood provides financial support annually to the NCJCC and its religious school. This past year we contributed to the purchase of chairs in our beautiful backyard and to the Garden of Remembrance. Additionally, throughout the years, Sisterhood has provided financial and other supports to such community-based organizations as KARE Crisis Nursery, Citizens for Choice, Hospitality House, Community Beyond Violence, Interfaith Food Ministry, The Food Bank of Nevada County, Bright Futures for Youth (Friendship Club and NEO). This year we were proud sponsors of the California Cares (Free) Clinic.

Sisterhood also organizes Oneg’s of wine and refreshments after religious services and we provide volunteer support at various NCJCC events, including Bar and Bat Mitzvahs upon request. Through our Caring Hands Program, we support Sisters and their families during times of illnesses or loss.

Sisterhood Book Club

Sisterhood hosts engaging book discussions on the second Monday of each month. Our discussions lead to lively conversation, much laughter and provocative dialogue, which allows us to know each other more deeply.

We invite you to join us at one of our meetings and we hope that you will leave as a member!
