SISTERHOOD 2010-2011

The Sisterhood has just celebrated 15 years of dedicated service to the Nevada County Jewish Community Center.

Our fund raising efforts through the Judaica Shop and other events has enabled us to continue our on going programs--

Support to the Religious School from snacks to scholarships--
Honoring the Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrants--along with the women who convert to Judaism--
Organizing the Friday night Onegs--
Maintain a Bereavement and Caring Hands committee to help our members in time of need--
An active Book Club--
Community outreach--
Our first Thursday of the month Meetings combines socializing--noshing-business meeting
with interesting speakers and programs--

Together our Sisterhood members, while supporting the NCJCC have formed bonds of respect and friendships--Looking forward we wish to continue to be the best friend of the
B'nai Harim family--

Book Club

The Sisterhood Bookclub of NCJCC meets on the second Monday of every other month @ 1:30 pm.

The Oct. 11th Bookclub meeting is at Harriett Kroot's home.  The book for
discussion is "Jephte's Daughter" by Naomi Ragen.  It is the story of the
pampered daughter of a wealthy Hasidic businessman.  Unbeknownst to her
father had made a secret vow forcing her to marry a man she hardly knew.
Shackled by ancient rules, she soon understands that to survive she will
have no choice but to fight for her freedom, to reconcile her own need to
live in the modern world with her ancestral obligations, and to choose
between the three men who vie for her body, her soul, and her love.

The Dec. 13th meeting location is not yet determined.  However, the book
choice is "The Hidden Pope" by Darcy O'Brien.  It is the untold story of a
lifelong friendship between Pope John Paul II and his childhood best friend,
who is Jewish. Their youth in the small Polish town of Wadowice, their
separation at the beginning of World War II, their individual experiences
under Nazi and Soviet tyranny, and their reunion almost thirty years later.

At the August meeting the members voted to add additional meetings on the
alternate months.  They will be on the same 2nd Monday of the month.  The
criteria for the books on the alternate months will not be restricted to a
Jewish author or Jewish topic.  We will look for books that deal with women.
The first selection for the November 8th meeting is "The Help" by Kathryn
Stockett.

For the January 10th meeting I have chosen "Nomad" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.  It
is the biography of her personal journey through the clash of civilizations
from Islam to America. Please contact for further information.
